Deficiency

Deficiency symptoms are health impairments that arise due to the inadequate absorption of nutrients. Every essential nutrient that is missing due to this lack of absorption capacity, is expressed in different symptoms.

The lack of the absorptive capacity, which is caused by the celiac disease-related atrophy of the villi in the small intestine, can cause a variety of different deficiencies. Initially, the disease leads to a reduced supply of iron and folic acid, leading to various forms of anemia. The absorption of calcium and vitamin D can be greatly reduced, which can lead to a decreased bone density. A deficiency of vitamin K can lead to disorders of blood coagulation. The decreased intake of protein may contribute to poor growth and a weakened immune system. The absorption of water by the intestine can be disrupted, leading to the typical diarrhea. Like most other consequences of celiac disease the deficiencies can be corrected by a strict gluten-free diet. In some cases, in consultation with a doctor support in the form of supplements or medication can be taken into consideration for a certain period of regeneration.
